Winter Walks

I think there’s something about winter that makes everything feel fresh, almost more alive. There’s serenity in the blank canvas that unfolds, the lack of vibrancy, that’s waiting to be sketched out come spring. The cold air makes it brisk and … inviting. I find walking in winter has a simple beauty that’s over complicated in warmer weather. I like the way the wind brushes over my skin, it’s cooling and rejuvenating. It also helps that I really like wrapping up in thick cosy jumpers and boots.

I went for a mind clearing walk in a local forest, to take in the simple things and appreciate the wonders of what we see every day but usually ignore. It’s one of those things I love to enjoy, to take a step back from the whirlwind of life and be at one with nature, so to speak. I feel like taking a leisurely winter stroll, somehow summarises the January month; refreshing, inspiring and … a little chilly.

I’m lucky to have a number of forests I can explore, within a reasonable distance, and I often don’t take advantage of this enough. They really do hold a creative motivation that is rare and unique. It’s the way the forest maps out its own pathway, growing high and carving from its natural materials, whatever it desires.

So if you’re feeling a little stuck, metaphorically, maybe you should give the forests or just a quick winter walk a chance…
